Chapter Sixty-Four

I’ve kept them hidden, my half-dozen eggs.

Away from the eyes of Grandmother.

Like a fox in the night, I’m a wolf in sheepskin, though I wish them no harm.

They’ll never be missed, this half-dozen eggs. But if I lost them then I’d be devastated.

How long since I stole them, I can’t quite recall. But soon they’ll crack open wide.

And something sharp will come out, a needle-like beak. Followed by goopy new birth.

But I’ll clean them off. Make them feel safe.

And these babies will all be my friends.

Not now. No, not now.

But soon, oh so soon.

My world, it quakes. I can’t stay.

And my tears wet the nest of those half-dozen eggs.

As I leave all my best friends behind.
