Chapter Thirty-Nine

By day, a mild-mannered suburbanite. By night, an explorer of the deep and unknown. Traversing the cavernous passageways hidden beneath our everyday. A spelunker. A voyager. A historian.

Past the soil and into stone. Through stone and into space. Beyond the fossils. Beyond the tar and oil of our decayed yesteryears. A vein of gold here, a cache of diamonds there. Had I been a paleontologist, I’d have acquired fame beyond belief. Had I been a miner, riches beyond compare.

Yet this is not why I dig. Not for fame, nor for fortune. But a quest for truth and honesty. It is here somewhere, hidden beneath the crust.

A cavernous pit spreads before me like the maw of a great beast, all hidden from the world by the walls of my very own house. What goes on behind closed doors, we never know. Yes, we may wonder. Yes, we may hypothesize. But those closed doors and drawn shades, they hide secrets far outside our imaginations. For who could imagine the traversals and discoveries I’ve been unearthing here.

The question though, it tugs at me — even though I continually push it from the forefront of my mind. For some…
